Summary: After receiving a frantic letter from her newlywed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find – her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.
Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.
Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.
And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.
Helloooooo! I have returned with a new spoopy review! I was supposed to write this up last week, but I didn’t, but it’s here now. In this update I’ll be talking about the new release Mexican Gothic! A perfect read for October to get into the swing of the season.
Right off the bat this book gave me “The Haunting of Hill House” vibes, but thankfully it was way easier for me to follow and be sort of interested in. I think the character and world building is just okaaaay. The thing I do have to say about that though is, I know this is supposed to be set in the 1950s Mexico, but honestly nothing really called out the time period so it either wasn’t very important or I just didn’t catch it. Why mention a time period if you’re not going to address it?! Ahhh! Maybe more descriptions about the way they dressed or other things going on in the world, I don’t know, I just needed something more to convince me it wasn’t set in present time because it sure as heck felt like it was.
I wasn’t sold on the book pretty much for the entire first half, which is unfortunate, but the second half picked up and was entertaining. Definitely an interesting premise, but more could have been done with it I feel like. I’m not going to lie, and say that I’m not just a wee bit disappointed as this was one of my anticipated books to read this month. If you don’t mind a slow build and little to no connection with the characters then I would recommend this, otherwise I would say you’ll be okay to skip out on this one.
The one saving grace in the book is probably Francis, but he’s not enough to hold up the whole book himself, poor lad. Oh well. I guess you can’t win them all. On to the next book!
I’m not quite sure what the next book will be, since this took me a whole extra week to get out, I feel like I’m at least 1 book behind so I’m going to try to get back on my sort of schedule. Try being the operative word. 🙃
As always I do have a make up look on Instagram and I will put a link at the bottom for you to check it out if you are interested. Like, subscribe, follow, all that good stuff if you like the things I do please and thank you! Until next time friends!
